What is a sales funnel?

Graphical representation of the route taken by a user of an e-commerce site, from when they enter to when they make a purchase.

A sales funnel should define the different stages a user passes through until they undergo a conversion, and show how many customers are lost at each stage of the process, thereby providing the option to improve such sections and reduce the abandon rate, increasing purchasing probabilities.

The process is represented by an inverted pyramid or funnel because there are always more visits to a page than sales and, as the purchasing process progresses, the number of users declines.
