## What it is and how it works

The word blends advertisement and editorial. It originated in print and is now common in digital media too. It is a form of sponsored content and a direct forerunner of native advertising.

Because it imitates editorial content, advertising rules and industry codes require it to be clearly labelled, with tags such as “advertisement” or “sponsored”. Hiding its commercial nature may amount to misleading or covert advertising and erodes trust in both the publication and the brand.
