## What it is and how it works

It may be static, animated or interactive, and is now mainly built with images, HTML5 or video; Flash banners disappeared when browsers stopped supporting the technology in 2020\. The classic 468 × 60 pixel size has fallen out of use in favour of other standard sizes such as 300 × 250, 728 × 90 or 320 × 50 on mobile, alongside responsive formats.

It is the basic unit of display advertising. Its effectiveness depends on placement, targeting, creative and frequency; too many ads lead to rejection and banner blindness.
