## What it is and how it works

The term has several meanings. In promotions, the brand refunds a percentage or a fixed amount after purchase, usually on proof of receipt. On cashback platforms, the website or app earns an affiliate commission from the retailer for each sale it generates and shares part of it with the buyer. Some cards and banks also refund a percentage of spending.

A different meaning, especially in English-speaking countries, is withdrawing cash at a shop till when paying by card, a service also available in Spain at some supermarkets and petrol stations. It is worth making clear which sense is meant in each case.
