## What it is and how it works

In its digital form, it means offering useful brand-related resources, such as templates, guides, icons or free trials, in exchange for a visit, a subscription or a sign-up. For it to work, the giveaway should relate to what the brand offers and have real value for the audience.

In business, the term also describes the razor and blades model: selling a product cheaply or giving it away in order to profit from complements or consumables, such as printers and ink cartridges. It is related to the lead magnet, a specific kind of giveaway designed to capture contacts, and to freemium, which offers a basic version of a service for free.
