## What it is and how it works

It works by uploading a file listing the URLs or domains whose links should be disavowed. The typical use case is a site with many artificial or low-quality links, bought or generated through link schemes, that has received a manual action or has good reason to expect one.

Google stresses that most sites do not need it, because its systems already ignore much link spam, and warns that misuse can harm rankings by discounting valuable links. Before using it, it is advisable to try to have the links removed at source.
