## What it is and how it works

Its aim is to be present wherever the audience is and to give people options for finding information and buying. In a multichannel approach each channel may be run fairly independently, with its own teams, data and objectives.

It differs from omnichannel, in which channels are integrated so that people can move between them seamlessly (for example, buying online and returning in store with their history recognised), and from cross-media, which spreads a single narrative across media. In practice, coordinating messages and measuring each channel helps avoid inconsistency and shows what each one contributes.
