## What it is and how it works

The term became popular in the early 2000s, when blogs were one of the main places for conversation online and cited one another through links, trackbacks and blogrolls. People also speak of topical or regional blogospheres, such as the tech or food blogosphere.

With the rise of social media, much of that conversation moved to other platforms and the term is used less often. It remains useful for describing communities of specialist blogs and for studies of influence or reputation within a sector.
