## What it is and how it works

It is used for high-traffic websites, demanding applications or projects with specific security or configuration requirements. The customer can manage it entirely or have the provider do so; either way, the processor, memory and disk are not shared with other sites.

Compared with a shared server, it offers more control and more predictable performance, but requires more technical knowledge and greater investment. Between the two sit virtual private servers (VPS) and cloud services, which allow resources to be scaled up or down with demand. It should not be confused with colocation, where the customer supplies their own machine and the provider only the space and connectivity.
