## What it is and how it works

It can be a desktop or mobile app, such as Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird, or run in the browser as webmail, like Gmail. It connects to servers using protocols such as IMAP or POP3 to receive and SMTP to send, and lets people manage several accounts in one place.

In email marketing it matters because each client renders HTML differently: a newsletter may look fine in one and broken in another. It is therefore advisable to test campaigns in the clients most used by the audience before sending.
