## What it is and how it works

It provides maps, satellite imagery and street-level views through Street View, as well as walking, driving, cycling and public transport directions with traffic data. It also shows local business listings with opening hours, photos and reviews, which makes it an important channel for local SEO.

For developers there is Google Maps Platform, a set of APIs for embedding maps, place search and route calculation in websites and apps. These APIs gave rise to many mashups in the early years of Web 2.0.
