## What it is and how it works

It usually works as an internal portal with news, documentation, a staff directory, procedures, forms or access to corporate applications. Only authorised people can use it, from the organisation’s network or through secure remote access.

It differs from an extranet, which opens part of the information to outside parties such as customers or suppliers. Many intranets are now built on cloud collaboration platforms; their usefulness depends less on technology than on clear information architecture and up-to-date content.
