## What it is and how it works

The word blends “permanent” and “link”. It became popular with blogs, where each post drops off the home page as new ones appear but remains available at its own URL. In content management systems such as WordPress, the permalink structure defines how those addresses are built, for example from the post title or the date.

A stable URL makes it easier for others to link to, cite and share content, and helps search engines consolidate signals on a single address. Changing the permalinks of a live site requires 301 redirects to avoid broken links.
