## What it is and how it works

Traditionally it is distributed through an RSS feed, which lets podcast apps download new episodes automatically. Today it is also consumed on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube, some of which host exclusive or paid content.

Unlike live radio or real-time streaming, a podcast is listened to whenever the listener chooses and can be downloaded. Formats vary widely: interviews, popular science, audio drama, panel discussions or news. For brands it is a channel for in-depth content that people take along while commuting or doing everyday tasks.
