## What it is and how it works

The name stands for Post Office Protocol, version 3\. The email client connects to the server with a username and password, downloads the messages to the device and, depending on the settings, deletes them from the server or leaves a copy. It is a simple protocol used only for receiving; sending is handled by SMTP.

Unlike POP3, IMAP keeps messages and folders on the server and synchronises them across devices, which makes it the usual choice when people check email on both phone and computer. POP3 is still offered by many providers, mainly for downloading local copies or in older set-ups.
