## What it is and how it works

The acronym is now usually expanded as Really Simple Syndication. A feed reader, such as Feedly or NetNewsWire, subscribes to the sources a person is interested in and gathers new articles in one place without visiting each site. The Atom format serves the same purpose with a different specification.

Although general public use declined with the rise of social media, RSS remains the technical backbone of podcasts and is used to feed aggregators, automated newsletters and integrations between tools.
