## What it is and how it works

During a session someone may view several pages, click, play videos or make purchases. In Google Analytics, a session ends by default after 30 minutes of inactivity, although that timeout can be changed; if the person returns later, a new session begins. Google Analytics 4 no longer starts a new session when the campaign changes or at midnight, as Universal Analytics did, so figures from the two versions are not directly comparable.

Sessions are not tied to an IP address but to identifiers such as cookies. Sessions should not be confused with users: one person can generate several sessions.
