## What it is and how it works

On the web, style sheets are written in CSS and usually stored in .css files shared by every page of a site. This separation keeps the look consistent, allows the design to change without touching the content, and lets presentation adapt to different devices or to print.

The term predates the web: in publishing and layout software, a style sheet groups the paragraph and character styles of a publication. It should not be confused with an editorial style guide, which sets writing conventions, although that is sometimes also called a style sheet.
