## What it is and how it works

Users simply log in to the provider’s website to read, send and organise messages from any connected device. Gmail, Outlook.com and the mail panels offered by hosting providers are common examples.

It differs from an email client, which is an application installed on the device that connects to the server through protocols such as IMAP, POP3 or SMTP. Today many accounts are used both ways, with messages synchronised between webmail and apps.
