## What it is and how it works

In the early years of the web a single person often handled nearly everything: coding, design, content publishing, the server and statistics. As sites grew, those tasks were split among specialist roles such as front-end and back-end development, systems administration, SEO, analytics and content management.

As a result, the term is now used less as a job title and more as a generic name for whoever runs a site. It still appears in expressions such as “webmaster tools”, the former name of search engines’ services for site owners.
