## Opening the circle

In a world where mass clothing production is in full swing, an increasingly loud and radical change is emerging: circular fashion. As awareness of the environmental and social impact of the fashion industry grows, the slow fashion movement is gaining strength, promoting an ethical and respectful approach in the textile sector.

In the face of the use-and-throw-away mindset, consumers are going for a continuous clothing cycle that makes the most of each garment before considering throwing it away. The popularity of second-hand and occasion-wear rental is transforming the codes of shopping and dressing.

The rise of buy-and-sell apps and the entry of fast fashion groups into these lines of business show that it is no longer simply about following the latest trends, but about buying consciously: wear with care, resell, reuse and repeat.

A paradigm shift that also influences the emotional relationship we build with clothes. People seek a deeper connection with what they buy and want to know the story behind each piece. A desire that implies a need for greater transparency from brands.

Driven by government policies, major fashion houses and textile companies are adopting more sustainable practices, involving all their stakeholders. Including citizens, whom they work to train and empower to make informed and responsible decisions, far from blaming them.

A contribution to the environment, stronger relationships with users and new business opportunities still to be explored. Circular fashion is more than the latest catwalk trend; it is a commitment to a lifestyle in which durability, meaning and timelessness are worth more than each season’s must-haves.

Sustainability is here to stay. In fashion too. The fashion and luxury sector has put the focus on sustainable development, whether in terms of production, supply chain, investment, communication or even regulation.

But everything suggests there is more talk than proven action. Lots of good intentions, good practices, suggestions and projects for show, but little real progress.

The environmental impact of fashion is still crucial. It is the second most polluting industry in the world. All the data suggests that we will keep working ever more firmly to reduce it, but also that textile demand will keep growing.

We need leaders who put sustainability at the heart of the industry, who treat the climate emergency as real and who drastically cut emissions without waiting for a wave of regulation that sweeps everyone away. The sector needs turning around, and it is a great opportunity to increase collaboration with entrepreneurs and researchers who bring new materials, processes and technology to achieve it.

We must also stop focusing exclusively on environmental consequences. These solutions cannot hide the social reality around production. It is vital that suppliers are treated as real partners and that we work with them on the social improvements the industry needs to achieve, agreeing prices, deliveries and production in a respectful and fair way.

We need regenerative fashion companies with a purpose that solve social and environmental problems, whose activity is based on triple sustainability (social, environmental and economic) and whose initiatives not only change their surroundings, but help change people’s mindset with an activist message that champions sustained and respectful consumption.
