## Skills for sale

Hobbies such as pottery, knitting, cooking or illustration have shifted from a focus on switching off to one of self-imposed pressure. Today, more and more, what starts as a hobby slips easily into the territory of improving, sharing and monetising, which are no longer just options but expectations. Leisure is no longer just free time; it is potential time.

The barriers to turning any skill into a product or service have fallen dramatically. Opening a channel, selling handmade pieces or teaching classes online is within almost anyone’s reach. Combined with economic pressure, stagnant wages and rising living costs, this pushes consumers to seek additional income. At that crossroads of accessibility and need, hobbies try to become something useful.

However, the transformation runs much deeper. The way we understand talent is changing. The traditional frameworks that structured recognition are losing ground to a more fluid model in which practical skills and the ability to generate value immediately take centre stage.

In this context, the narrative of permanent entrepreneurship becomes especially seductive and leads to a gradual commodification of free time. Hobbies turn into projects, social life into opportunities and rest into a productive phase.

The line between hobby and work does not disappear, but it becomes blurred enough for enjoyment to start being measured in results.

## Monetising comes at a cost

In theory, hobbies are seen as a space to do something for pleasure, without goals, metrics or outside expectations. However, in a culture driven by hyperproductivity, that space shrinks and the question shifts from “what do you like doing” to “what can you do with it”.

Turning a hobby into a source of income may seem, at first glance, a natural progression, but it also introduces a tension that is hard to ignore: when something that used to be free starts answering to audiences or results, something in its essence changes. The pressure we associate with work seeps into leisure and, with it, the possibility of frustration, comparison and giving up.

In the process, many activities go through an implicit filter. If the skill is not good enough, does not grow or does not generate a return, it stops being justified.

Anything that does not produce can start to feel like a waste of time, making pleasure conditional on performance and enjoyment conditional on validation.

Yet not everything valuable has to be useful. Hobbies, when they stay outside the logic of productivity, serve a purpose that work cannot replace. They help build one’s own identity, sustain self-esteem and offer a kind of satisfaction that does not depend on results.

Protecting that space does not mean giving up on professionalising a passion; it means making a choice: setting clear limits between what one wants to turn into work and what one prefers to keep as a refuge. At a time when everything can be monetised, keeping zones free from profitability is not a step backwards; it is a unique way of preserving what, precisely because it has no price, still has value.

Zorraquino spotlights

1. 01
Leisure is no longer separate from the logic of productivity; it has become one more extension of personal performance, where enjoyment is measured in terms of progress, visibility or return.
2. 02
The ease of monetising skills, combined with economic pressure, is speeding up the transformation of hobbies into micro-projects, blurring the line between pleasure and usefulness.
3. 03
The skills-based economy is redefining individual value. A formal path matters less than the ability to put specific skills to work in real, visible contexts.
4. 04
Companies that know how to enable, showcase or support people’s passions, without automatically turning them into performance, will be able to build more relevant and lasting relationships.
5. 05
The self-imposed pressure typical of today’s work seeps into free time, damaging its original purpose and creating a constant tension between enjoying and optimising.
6. 06
A quiet need is emerging to protect unproductive spaces, understood as essential territory for identity, wellbeing and a freer relationship with oneself.
