Audience

An audience is the group of people who receive or consume a medium, programme, piece of content or advertising placement over a given period

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

In traditional media it is estimated through surveys and panels that show how many people read, listen to or watch an outlet. Online, figures are expressed as users, visits or views, but each platform measures differently, so numbers from different sources should not be compared without checking their definitions.

In marketing, audience also refers to the group a campaign or ad platform targets, such as a custom or lookalike audience. It is related to the target audience but not the same: the target is who you want to reach, while the audience is who actually receives the message.
