Bartering

Bartering is a commercial arrangement in which payment is made, wholly or partly, in goods, services or advertising space instead of money

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

In the media it often takes the form of space swaps: a company supplies products or content in exchange for airtime or advertising exposure. There are also business barter platforms and networks that help firms move surplus stock or spare capacity.

Even without money changing hands, the exchange has economic value and usually has accounting and tax implications, so it is wise to document what is provided and how it is valued. It differs from sponsorship, in which a brand contributes resources in return for association, not necessarily through a direct exchange of goods.
