Flipbook

A digital flipbook is an online publication that mimics the look of a printed magazine or catalogue, with pages that turn with a visual effect

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is usually generated from a PDF using dedicated tools and published on or embedded in a website. It is used for catalogues, corporate magazines, annual reports or brochures when the aim is to keep the print layout and the feel of leafing through pages.

It is not necessarily better than a PDF or an HTML page: the text can be hard to read on mobile, hard for search engines to index and hard to use with assistive technologies unless prepared for it. For content that needs to work on mobile, a responsive web version is usually more accessible. Originally, a flip book is a booklet of drawings that appear to move when its pages are flicked quickly.
