Flog

A flog is a fake blog, created or paid for by a company, that poses as independent in order to carry covert advertising

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

The term blends “fake” and “blog”. It is a form of astroturfing: it looks like the spontaneous voice of a user or enthusiast, but its content serves a brand's interests. It may aim to generate favourable opinions, discredit competitors or attract traffic.

Besides damaging reputation once exposed, it may amount to covert advertising, which advertising and unfair competition law prohibit. It differs from a corporate blog, which clearly identifies the company, and from properly labelled sponsored content.
