Mobile marketing

Mobile marketing is the set of marketing activities that use mobile devices, especially smartphones, as a channel for communicating and building relationships with people

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It covers in-app and mobile web advertising, social media campaigns consumed on the phone, text and messaging, push notifications, marketing within a brand’s own app, QR codes, location-based advertising and app store optimisation (ASO). Since the phone is now the main way much of the population accesses the internet, many digital strategies are designed for mobile first.

It differs from m-commerce, which refers to buying on a mobile device, and forms part of the overall marketing plan rather than standing alone. Because the phone is such a personal device, consent, frequency and relevance are decisive in avoiding intrusiveness.
