Word cloud
A word cloud is a visual representation of a text in which the most frequent words appear larger or more prominent than the rest
What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.
What it is and how it works
It is used to get a quick sense of the dominant themes in open-ended survey answers, customer comments, transcripts or social media posts. Many online tools and programming libraries can generate them.
It is an exploratory visualisation with limitations: it ignores context, sentence meaning and negation, and word sizes are hard to compare accurately. For reliable conclusions it should be combined with thematic or sentiment analysis. On 2000s blogs a variant called a tag cloud was common, displaying the site’s most used categories as a navigation aid.
