Ambient intelligence
Ambient intelligence is a technological vision in which everyday environments, fitted with sensors and connected devices, sense people’s presence and adapt unobtrusively to their needs
What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.
What it is and how it works
It brings together ubiquitous computing, the Internet of Things, wireless networks and artificial intelligence so that a home, office, vehicle or public space can adjust lighting, temperature, information or services to the context, without people having to operate an explicit interface. The concept spread in the late 1990s, and the European Commission promoted it as a research priority in the early 2000s.
Parts of this vision can be seen today in home automation, voice assistants and smart buildings. It also raises challenges around privacy, consent and control, because these systems collect data continuously and often invisibly.
