Error colour

The error colour is the colour a design system reserves to signal errors, such as invalid input in a form field or an action that could not be completed

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is usually a shade of red applied to borders, icons and helper text. Material Design defines it as one of its colour roles; in its 2018 version the baseline value was #B00020, while Material 3 generates it within a tonal palette with variants for light and dark backgrounds.

For accessibility, errors should not be conveyed by colour alone: they need text explaining what went wrong and how to fix it, plus an icon where helpful, and sufficient contrast with the background.
