Google Earth

Google Earth is a Google application for exploring the planet on a virtual globe built from satellite imagery, aerial photography and 3D models

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It grew out of technology from Keyhole, a company Google bought in 2004, and launched in 2005. It now runs in the browser, on mobile devices and as a desktop version, Google Earth Pro, aimed at more technical uses such as measuring, importing geographic data or printing in high resolution.

Unlike Google Maps, which is designed for finding places, getting around and planning routes, Google Earth focuses on visual exploration, historical imagery and map-based storytelling. It is used in education, journalism, urban planning and environmental communication.
