What is open-source?

Collaboration model that takes advantage of the possibilities inherent in freely distributed and openly developed software to conduct online projects that bring together users from all around the world for the purpose of massively solving problems and programming diverse applications.

Although based on principles similar to those of the free software movement, which is focussed on moral connotations, open-source software is aimed at the technical benefits of sharing source code. It has a pragmatic vision based on the idea that when a program can be read, modified and redistributed, this promotes its rapid evolution and improvement, and users will adapt it to their own needs giving rise to new applications of a higher quality than any proprietary software.

It is also a model that inspires crowdsourcing practices, but unlike these, it tends to produce a mutual benefit amongst collaborators, as in the case of Linux, Mozilla, MySQL, etc.
