PaaS

PaaS (platform as a service) is a cloud computing model in which a provider supplies a complete environment for building, running and managing applications without having to manage the underlying infrastructure

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

The provider looks after servers, operating systems, networking, storage and runtimes, while the development team focuses on code and data. It usually includes deployment tools, autoscaling, managed databases and monitoring, and is billed by usage. Well-known examples include Heroku, Google App Engine and Azure App Service.

It sits between IaaS, which provides infrastructure (virtual machines, networks) for the customer to configure, and SaaS, which delivers a finished application ready to use. Its advantage is speed; the trade-off is greater dependence on the provider.
