Plug-in

A plug-in is a software component installed on top of an application or platform to add features without changing its core code

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

They are common in content management systems such as WordPress, where they add forms, shops, SEO or caching, in browsers (where “extension” is now the usual term), in design tools such as Figma and in code editors.

They make it possible to tailor a tool to each need, but every plug-in adds a dependency and potential security or performance issues. It is wise to install only what is needed, check that each one is maintained and keep it updated. Unlike a widget, which is a visible interface element, a plug-in may work entirely in the background.
