Shared server

A shared server is a server that hosts several websites belonging to different customers, all sharing its resources, such as processor, memory and disk space

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is the simplest type of hosting: the hosting company maintains the hardware and server software, and each customer manages their site from their own control panel. It suits websites with moderate traffic and few technical requirements.

Because resources are shared, heavy usage by one site can affect the performance of others, and configuration options are limited. As a project grows, it usually moves to a virtual private server (VPS), a dedicated server or cloud hosting.
