Technorati

Technorati was a search engine and index specialising in blogs, highly influential in the 2000s, which stopped operating as such in 2014

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

Founded in 2002 by David Sifry, it crawled millions of blogs and ranked results by recency, unlike general search engines, which prioritised relevance. Its authority ranking, based on the links each blog received, and its lists of the most popular blogs were a benchmark in the blogosphere, and it was used to track mentions of brands and topics in near real time.

In 2014 it withdrew its blog index and search engine to focus on advertising technology. It is a historical term that helps explain the blogosphere era and the early days of monitoring online conversation, now covered by social listening tools.
