A trending topic is a subject, word or hashtag that attracts an unusual volume of conversation on a social network at a given time

What it is and how it works
The concept originated on Twitter, now X, which shows a list of trends calculated from sudden growth in mentions, not just total volume, and which can be tailored by location or interests. It need not be preceded by a hashtag: it can be a name, a phrase or an event.
Other platforms, such as TikTok or Instagram, have their own trend systems. By extension, the phrase is used for any highly topical issue. For brands, joining a trend can bring visibility, but its relevance and tone should be weighed first.
