Scrim

A scrim is a visual layer that reduces the prominence of the content beneath it or improves the contrast of an overlaid element. It may be uniform or use a gradient

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

The layer does not in itself disable controls or make an interface modal. If it accompanies a dialog, focus management and interaction should be implemented consistently. It can also be used over images, provided the actual contrast of the text and its states is checked.
