Display advertising

Display advertising is graphic advertising shown in reserved spaces on websites, apps and other digital environments, using visual formats such as banners, images, animations or video

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is bought directly from publishers or through display networks and programmatic advertising, and is usually priced per thousand impressions (CPM), though also per click or other actions. It is used mainly to build awareness, reach specific audiences and run remarketing.

Unlike search advertising, which responds to an active query, it reaches people while they consume other content. Its performance therefore depends heavily on targeting, placement, creative, frequency capping and the context in which it appears.
