Expandable banner

An expandable banner is a display ad that grows over the page content when someone interacts with it, for instance by tapping or, on desktop, hovering over it

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

At rest it occupies a standard space; once expanded it shows more information, images, video or a form without taking the person away from the page. It collapses again when closed or when the interaction ends.

To avoid being intrusive, the expansion should depend on a clear user action and the close button should be visible. On mobile, where there is no hover, expansion is triggered by a tap.
