Interstitial ad

An interstitial ad is a full-screen advertisement that appears between two pieces of content, for instance when moving from one web page to another or at a natural break in an app or game

What it is and how it works

It fills the screen for a few seconds or until the person closes it, which gives it high visibility but also makes it interruptive. It is common in mobile apps and games, where it appears at transitions such as the end of a level.

On mobile websites, Google warns that intrusive interstitials, those covering content as soon as someone arrives, can harm page experience, and advertising best-practice guidelines discourage them in that context. To be acceptable it should appear at transition points, infrequently and with a visible close button.
