What it is and how it works
They became popular in the early 2000s, when technologies such as Flash allowed animations with transparent backgrounds. After their run they could disappear on their own, be closed manually or settle into a standard banner.
Their intrusiveness, the end of Flash in 2020, ad blockers and standards against disruptive formats have made them all but obsolete. The term is kept as a historical reference among floating formats; overlay ads still in use today tend to be more restrained and easy to close.
