Monogram

A monogram is a graphic sign formed by combining or interlacing two or more letters, usually initials, to create a single symbol

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It has been used for centuries on seals, signatures and crests, and is now common among fashion, luxury, hospitality and professional services brands. It may work as a symbol mark or accompany the full name.

It should not be confused with an acronym: an acronym is a word that is pronounced, whereas a monogram is a visual device. The design challenge is to keep the letters recognisable and legible at small sizes, for example as an app icon.
