Content design

Content design decides what information a person needs, when they need it and how it should be presented to help them act

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It combines research, structure and writing with other forms of communication. It may conclude that a text should become a tool or be removed. Its starting point is the need, not filling available space in an interface.

Variants and linked concepts

  • Web copywriter. Web writing organises information to support understanding and action on screen, with useful hierarchies and links.
  • Copy. Copy can also refer to a piece of advertising text. Its length and tone should reflect the function it serves.
  • Plain language. Plain language makes information easier to find, understand and use. It requires structure and precision as well as familiar words.
  • Readability. Readability depends on vocabulary, structure and context. Automated readability formulas do not assess comprehension as a whole.
