Black hat SEO

Black hat SEO is the set of techniques that try to improve a site’s search engine rankings by breaching the search engines’ policies, usually by manipulating their systems rather than improving content for people

What it is and how it works

Common practices include cloaking (showing search engines different content from users), hidden text, keyword stuffing, buying links or running networks of sites built only for linking, and mass-producing low-value pages, including unreviewed AI-generated content. Google covers them in its spam policies.

Any effect tends to be temporary: algorithms and manual review teams can demote or remove the affected pages, and recovery takes time. It contrasts with white hat or ethical SEO, which follows search engine guidelines; “grey hat” is sometimes used for ambiguous practices in between. The term comes from westerns, where the villain wore a black hat.
