Double opt-in

Double opt-in adds a confirmation step to a subscription request, usually through a link sent to the email address provided. It helps establish that someone with access to that inbox confirms the request

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It does not establish personal identity or authorise every subsequent use of the data on its own. The confirmation should match what was explained at sign-up. Keeping a record of the request and confirmation is useful, as is making it easy for people to change their preferences or unsubscribe.
