Link baiting

Link baiting is an off-page SEO technique that involves creating content so useful, original or striking that other websites link to it of their own accord

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

The content acts as “bait” to earn inbound links and mentions, which contribute to a site’s popularity. Studies based on original data, free tools, reference guides, data visualisations and resources that solve a specific problem tend to work well. It still needs promotion so that the right audience discovers it.

It differs from clickbait, which seeks clicks through misleading or exaggerated headlines, and from link exchanges or paid links, which search engine guidelines treat as manipulation. Tactics based on controversy may attract links but can also damage a brand’s reputation.
