Aggregator

An aggregator is an application or service that brings together content from many sources, such as blogs, news sites or websites, in one place, usually through RSS or Atom feeds

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

In its classic sense, a feed reader lets people subscribe to several sites and see their updates without visiting each one. Google Reader, one of the most popular, closed in 2013, but readers such as Feedly and Inoreader, or those built into some browsers and email clients, are still widely used to follow developments in a field.

By extension, the term also covers services that compile news from different outlets, such as Google News, and platforms that group offers from several providers, such as flight or hotel comparison sites. For publishers, providing a valid feed makes it easier for their content to reach these services.
