Bookmarklet

A bookmarklet is a browser bookmark that, instead of opening a web address, runs a small piece of JavaScript on the page currently being viewed

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is created by saving a link that starts with “javascript:” as a bookmark. When clicked, it can save the page to a read-later service, share it, highlight elements, display the heading structure or check accessibility and SEO details.

The word blends bookmark and applet. Browser extensions, which are more powerful, now cover many of these functions, but bookmarklets remain handy because they need no installation. Some sites with strict security policies may block them.
