Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are a navigation element that shows the hierarchical path from the home page to the page a person is currently on

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

They usually appear as a horizontal row of links separated by a symbol, for example “Home › Men › Footwear › Trainers”. They help people find their bearings, move up a level in one click and understand the site structure, which is especially useful in online shops and large sites.

They normally reflect the site hierarchy rather than browsing history. Marked up with structured data (BreadcrumbList), they help search engines interpret site architecture; Google has used this information to show the path in its results, although how it is displayed changes over time and by device.
